How Scores Are Calculated

Meet Format:

The State Meet will be conducted on 3 consecutive days.

Day One - Individual and team qualifiers will compete in the current THSGCA adopted compulsory exercises.

Day Two – The individual and team qualifiers will compete in the optional exercises.  The results of day one plus day two will determine the final placing of the All-Around and Team.  In addition, the 10 individual finalists on each event (plus ties) will advance to the event finals.

Day Three -   Event Finals Competition

Team  Qualifying Procedures:

The top 3 teams from each region that make or exceed the state qualifying score will advance to the High School State Meet.  There are currently 4 regions in the state which equals a total of 12 team slots.  If these slots are not filled by a region and space is available, the next highest scoring team which has made the qualifying score, may be invited to attend.  This is called an at-large team.  The state meet host is allowed an automatic bid to the state meet.

Team Scoring:

Each team is limited to 5 athletes per event; of which one must be an all-around contestant. The top 3 scores on each event are added to determine the teams score for each day of competition.  Day one is added to day two scores to determine the final team standings.

Individual Qualifying Procedures:

Each region will qualify their 10 highest scoring individual event finishers and their 8 highest scoring all-arounder finishers to the State Meet. Ties will not be broken and each qualifier must meet or exceed the state qualifying score for that event.  Individuals that qualify to State with a team are automatically eligible for individual and all-around awards regardless if they finished in the top 10 or 8 respectively at the regionals.

Individual Scoring

An individual’s event score in the compulsory routine (day one) is added to the optional event routine score (day two) to determine the athlete’s placement on each event.  The top 10 places on each event (plus ties) will qualify to the Finals Competition (day three).

All-Around Scoring:

An all-arounder is an athlete that competes on all 6 events for boys or 4 events for girls.  Their score is determined by adding the day one (compulsory) event total to the day two (optional) event total.  The all-around is considered an event by itself, and is awarded after the second day of competition.

Team Awards and Finals:

The second day of team competition is considered team finals.  The top 6 teams will be awarded team trophies at the conclusion of day two.  In addition, all members of the top 3 teams will receive medals and all members of the top 6 teams will receive a certificate.  The teams that finish 1st thru 5th will be considered “First Team All-State” and teams finishing 6th thru 10th will be considered “Second Team All-State”.

Individual Awards and Finals:

The top 10 event places plus ties will advance to the Event Finals Competition.  The final placement on each event will be determined by adding day one (compulsory) plus day two (optional) to the day three(finals) score.  The top 10 finishers will be awarded the official THSGCA medal.
